Genocide widows in Nyanza district now have mobile phones donated by MTN
Melanie Mukarugomwa 70, made her first phone call today afternoon after MTN Rwanda donated free mobile phones to 20 elderly and needy genocide widows in Nyanza district.
This morning, April 14, MTN CEO and his staff visited the widows and introduced them to the digital life.
Mukarugomwa says she will be able to chat with relatives and friends and sharing news.
The widows couldn’t afford a mobile phone, thanks to MTN now they are able to experience the digital age.
Overwhelmed and thankful to MTN, as she received her first call from News Of Rwanda, Mukarugomwa said she is happy to be connected and will make sure she never misses out on the new tech-life.
“Although I can’t easily see, I am able to speak and I will be talking to people. I am very happy to have a phone. My housemaid will be helping me in case of difficulties.”
Another widow, Akimpaye, failed to talk to News of Rwanda, but Chantal, the maid, said it is a matter of time and they will adapt to the digital life. “They are too happy, can’t you hear laughter and applause outside, they are just too excited.”
However they need airtime. “Maybe you will help find someone to help,” she told News Of Rwanda.
“They are extremely happy, they are all celebrating and so excited. I think someone else should think of donating airtime that will be facilitating them to communicate.”
After donating the mobile phones, MTN Rwanda also left a cheque of Rwf9 million for upkeep. It includes medical insurance, food, and accommodation. They also got each one a new Kitenge fabric and a branded umbrella.
