Two men suspected to be burglars have been arrested in Kicukiro District in an ongoing police crackdown.
Martin Uwadata and Jean Damascene Nkurunziza on Tuesday in Masaka Sector where they are said to have stolen electronics after breaking into houses the previous night.
At the time of their arrest, the duo was found in possession of television sets and other electronic equipment.
Superintendent Modest Mbabazi, the Central Region Police Spokesperson, said some of the items recovered from the suspects had been stolen from a house of one Christian Umuhire, also in Masaka.
The recovered electronic were returned to the rightful owners.
“These two suspects were identified by members of the public, who collaborated with community night patrols and trailed them. After locating where they hid the items, they called Police officers who arrived in time and arrested them before fleeing the venue,” Supt. Mbabazi said.
He commended the residents for being an eye for their neighbours.
“This is a good gesture and an indication of the role and need to strengthen the proactive strategy of community policing. Cooperation between security organs and the public in this policing era is inevitable to prevent crimes and ensure safety in communities.
Article 300 of the penal code stipulates that, any person who commits theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
